Girl's Night Out

I think I'm actually pure romanced out.  Some of my closest friends in high school were cheerleaders and in college I had my sorority sisters.  I'm bound to go to a Pure Romance party...or 12.  Double that for Mary Kay parties.

Since I need to exit singledom with a bang (not literally), I wanted to see what sorts of bachelorette party services exist.  Perhaps something with more booze and less anal beads.  Gross.

Here's what I'm looking for...a lot of this...

Maybe some of this...

Perhaps a couple of these...for old times sakes...

But definitely none of this...

Surprisingly, people make it pretty simple for you.

Below are a couple sites that do all the legwork for you.  I was shocked (floored, thrilled, exstatic) by the amount of liquor a bar or club is willing to comp when they know a group of girls is headed their way.  The last bachelorette party I saw at a bar was wearing penis necklaces and drinking rail vodka like it was water in the desert.  They might as well wore bullseyes all night.

BLACK FRIDAY! Aghghghgh!

Thank you, Dealigg.com.  I never thought I'd be one of the crazies, standing in line at 4:30 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving.  But I need my $200 42" TV!  In fact, I need two of them.  Hello, retail addiction!

I feel bad for my mom, who isn't computer-savvy.  She has to wait for these ads to come in her Saturday paper, and she can't compare products on Google.  Oh technology.  You make it so easy to spend my money.

Hot or Not

In fleeting moment of insanity, I purchased an issue of the Harvard Business Review while in the airport.  The magazine cost me $17.  It didn't have free perfume samples or tell me the 100 things men are dying to try in bed.

Rest assured.  It was worth every penny.

There was an article called "Hot or Not," which touched on a subject that my friends and I have been discussing for some time.  Do prettier people get ahead in the workplace?  Is it fair?

The author, Alison Beard, introduced a concept that she calls "erotic capital."  As the article described, this entails "a mix of beauty, sex appeal, self-presentation, and people skills."  Is it reasonable to use your charms in the office?  Is it fair that, in America, a pretty face will earn (on average) 5% more?

Let's back up.  I have a friend who works in a male-dominated industry.  Being a woman who graduated from a technical college, this is no surprise.  However, she feels/felt hostile about being a woman in a male-prominent place of employment.  She believes that she is treated differently because she is a woman, is held to a different standard than men, and has to work that much harder to prove herself to her male counterparts.

Do I think her notions are accurate?  Yes.  Do I think women get treated differently from men in the workplace?  Absolutely.  Would I have it any other way?  No.

Enter erotic capital.

What I think women should start doing is using their god-given womanly charms to get ahead, not just in the office, but in all aspects of life.  No woman should go out of her way to be "one of the guys" just to fit in.  Nor should they feel compelled to compete or outdo their male co-workers.  You'd be surprised how far a genuine smile or a new perfume will go when it comes to asking your male co-workers for a favor or for some assistance.

Let me be clear.  I'm not saying that you should put on your best push-up bra and highest pair of high heels everyday for work.  Don't make yourself a sexual object.  But quit going against the grain!  Embrace your femininity.

Songs That Make You Feel Better

In another life, I was a music journalist.

I stumbled (literally.) across the following website:

Songs That Make You Feel Better

I discovered The Decemberists.  Thank you, tylr from Williamsburg, New York.  Where have I been?  Not in Portland, apparently.  They are amazing.  I dig this mix.  I think the author hit the nail on the head.  These songs really do make you feel better.  Why don't people give each other mix tapes anymore?  It's like a lost art.  I digress.  Not only is this an incredible mix, but the description is pretty funny...

"Have a lot on your mind? Old lady got you down? This mix is for you. Turn off your cell, dim the lights, roll a joint, and turn the A/C down to 60. It'll all make sense."
